City plans major expansion of electric vehicle charging stations

During a recent government meeting, officials discussed the implementation of electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure in Lebanon, focusing on the need for fast chargers, funding opportunities, and upcoming proposals.

The conversation highlighted the necessity for level 3 chargers, particularly for police vehicles, which would allow for quick recharging during breaks. The police station is already prepared for the installation of these chargers, with plans for both level 3 and level 2 chargers in place. The estimated cost for a level 3 charger, including installation, is around $180,000, which is considered more economical than previously anticipated.

A significant point of discussion was the recent announcement of a $500 million federal grant aimed at communities that applied for funding last year but were not awarded. Lebanon had submitted a proposal for $5.2 million to install EV chargers at seven sites, and officials expressed optimism about their chances, noting that their application was rated \"highly recommended.\" The deadline for resubmitting the proposal is July 1st, and no changes can be made to the original application.

The meeting also addressed the overlap between the EV infrastructure plan and the proposed Solaflect EV chargers. Officials are considering the installation of two chargers in the lower lot and four additional chargers at another site. They emphasized that while the fast charging stations may not be operational this year, level 2 chargers could be installed before the year's end.

Additionally, the city is moving forward with a Request for Information (RFI) to gather input on the EV infrastructure project, with plans to present the findings to the city council on July 3rd. The officials are keen to expedite the process to ensure timely implementation and to maintain momentum with their partners, including Solaflect EV and AMP UP.
