City Council Approves New Playground with Generous Donation

In a recent city council meeting, officials discussed the upcoming renovation of a playground at Blessed Sacrament Church, following the church's generous donation of property and funds. Karen Murphy, representing the city, outlined the details of the project, which includes the donation of a former school playground site and up to $200,000 for renovations.

The council accepted the land donation in August 2023, with the property transfer completed in May 2024. Currently, $187,000 remains from the donation to fund the playground's renovation. The proposed design features equipment suitable for children aged 2 to 12, including swings, climbing structures, and a popular seesaw model already enjoyed at Grove Park.

Murphy noted that the city will contract the installation of the playground equipment due to staff workload, a change that the church supports. The council will review a proposal for installation costs at a later date. To proceed with ordering the equipment, the council approved a budget amendment to recognize the donation and authorized a purchase order for the equipment, totaling $146,967.12.

The playground renovation is expected to enhance community recreational options, with the lead time for equipment delivery ranging from 6 to 16 weeks. The council expressed enthusiasm for the project, highlighting its potential positive impact on local families and children.
