During a recent city council meeting in Sweetwater, Texas, several key items were addressed, including the approval of the quarterly investment report and discussions on health insurance proposals for the upcoming fiscal year.
The council unanimously approved the quarterly investment report for the period ending June 30, 2024. Following this, they reviewed insurance proposals for health, dental, and life benefits for fiscal year 2024-2025, which were opened on July 8. Staff will collaborate with the broker of record to evaluate these proposals and present recommendations at the next city council meeting scheduled for August 13, 2024.
A significant portion of the meeting focused on an ordinance concerning dilapidated structures. The council held a public hearing regarding a property located at 609 West 9th Street, which has been deemed unfit for human habitation. Despite notifying the property owner, no one appeared to address the council. Staff recommended demolition of the structure, and the council voted in favor of declaring it dilapidated and ordering repairs or demolition within 35 days.
Lynn Barrett, the director of planning and operations, provided updates on code enforcement and announced her resignation effective July 22, after 14 months of service. She highlighted recent activities, including the issuance of 57 building permits and the hiring of a new building official, Ray Salinas, who brings experience from Fort Worth. Barrett also mentioned upcoming changes to zoning codes aimed at reducing the number of variance requests for carports.
In community initiatives, the city manager reported on the launch of the annual fan drive to support seniors during the summer heat. So far, 19 fans and $1,360 in donations have been collected, with plans to purchase additional fans for distribution.
