Police Department Seeks Major Budget Boost Amid Rising Calls

During a recent government meeting, the Department of Public Safety presented its budget for the upcoming fiscal year, highlighting significant growth and resource needs across its divisions, including police, fire marshal, code enforcement, and animal control.

The police department, which currently employs 34 sworn officers, is requesting an increase in personnel by adding two officers and reclassifying a dispatcher to a lead communications officer, bringing the total to 47 personnel. The department reported a dramatic rise in calls for service, estimating 42,600 for the current year, more than double the previous year's figures. To support this growth, the police chief emphasized the need for new equipment, including four patrol units and advanced investigative tools like a TrueNarc drug tester, which can accurately identify narcotics.

The chief also discussed the necessity of replacing aging vehicles, some of which are nearing the end of their operational lifespan, and proposed a budget of approximately $513,000 to cover personnel and equipment needs. Additionally, the department is looking to enhance officer safety by upgrading body armor to rifle-rated vests and implementing incentive pay for officers.

The fire marshal's division, recently revitalized, is focused on improving operational efficiency and safety standards. The fire marshal outlined several accomplishments, including the development of new policies and training programs. The division is currently seeking to fill an investigator position to bolster its capabilities.

Code enforcement has also seen growth, with the hiring of two new officers and a push to increase staffing further. The division aims to enhance compliance and safety within the community, with plans to update food establishment regulations and improve overall service delivery.

Lastly, the newly established animal control division is in its formative stages, with data collection underway to assess its operational needs.
