Mayor proposes ambitious housing project to tackle regional crisis

In a recent government meeting, Grafton Mayor Chris West presented a significant housing project aimed at addressing the region's pressing housing shortage. The proposal involves the construction of 236 apartment units by Grand Flux and Mac Construction, with an estimated project cost of $12 million, including $350,000 for land acquisition. The project is strategically located just north of First United Bank and is part of a broader initiative to enhance housing availability in the area.

Mayor West emphasized the urgency of the project, noting that the region is lagging in housing development, which is critical for accommodating the local workforce, particularly in light of temporary workers brought in by companies like Marvin. To facilitate this development, the city is seeking a 13-year tax exemption pilot program at 100% for the project.

During the meeting, city commissioners expressed support for the initiative, with discussions highlighting the importance of housing as a key factor in regional economic growth. The motion to approve the tax exemption was unanimously passed, reflecting a collective commitment to advancing housing solutions in Grafton.

Additionally, the meeting addressed the appointment of Sherry Altendorf to the Walsh County Housing Authority, which was also approved without opposition.
