City Council Faces Backlash Over Budget Transparency Issues

During a recent city council meeting, several pressing issues were raised, highlighting concerns over governance, budget management, and community engagement.

Council member Jose Gimenez criticized the current council's lack of accountability and transparency, particularly regarding the city manager's role. He emphasized that council members should freely ask questions without needing prior permission, asserting that this is essential for a functioning democracy. Gimenez expressed frustration over perceived micromanagement within the council, suggesting that it undermines their responsibilities to the public.

Crystal Iniguez, vice chair of the Measure E committee, echoed concerns about budget transparency. She reported that her committee had not been given adequate time or information to provide informed recommendations on the city’s budget, particularly criticizing the timing of budget meetings that occurred after budget approvals. Iniguez urged the council to honor the financial sacrifices of residents and ensure responsible use of funds, especially in light of a proposed half-percent tax increase.
