City Council Approves Controversial Auto Dealership Project

During a recent city council meeting, discussions centered around the proposed construction of a new auto dealership, specifically the Pasadena Resnick Porsche, located at 2915 East Colorado Boulevard. The project, which has been in the works for nearly three years, requires a conditional use permit and involves the vacation of Nina Street to facilitate the dealership's development.

The council received mixed feedback from the public, with two letters supporting the project and one expressing concerns. The Planning Commission previously reviewed the application, resulting in a split vote. While they recommended approval for some aspects, they also raised objections regarding the project's compliance with the East Pasadena specific plan, particularly its pedestrian orientation and design.

The proposed dealership will occupy a 4.4-acre site currently featuring commercial buildings and surface parking. The new structure is designed to be approximately 58,850 square feet, with a height of 36 feet, and will include a service area, customer parking, and outdoor vehicle display spaces. Notably, the existing Swanson and Peterson building will be retained and repurposed for vintage Porsche services.

City staff emphasized that the project aligns with the community's vision for economic vitality, aiming to provide jobs and services while enhancing the area's commercial character. The council is expected to deliberate further on the project, weighing the Planning Commission's recommendations against community feedback and the potential economic benefits of the new dealership.
