Residents demand action against short term rental chaos

During a recent government meeting, residents expressed concerns regarding the impact of short-term rentals on their community, particularly in the Cedars condominium in Mary Esther. One resident highlighted that the area, which they consider their home, is increasingly resembling a hotel environment due to the influx of short-term renters. They urged the council to consider the unique nature of their living situation when drafting new ordinances, emphasizing the need for regulations that protect long-term residents.

The meeting also covered the conceptual plan for the Cristobal Landing Waterfront Park, a project funded entirely by hotel and bed tax revenue. The county, in partnership with the City of Marietta, has acquired property on South Crystal Ball Road for this development. The council reviewed feedback from a public workshop held in May and discussed various aspects of the park's design, including the placement of showers. There was a debate over whether showers should be located inside or outside the facility, weighing security concerns against practicality for park users. Ultimately, the council leaned towards outdoor showers, believing they would reduce the potential for illicit activities while still serving the needs of visitors.

The council is set to finalize the waterfront park plan in upcoming meetings, with further opportunities for public input before the ordinance is enacted.
