Facility dog Daisy brings hope and healing to inmates

During a recent government meeting, officials introduced Daisy, a facility dog from Inmate Services Behavioral Health, who is set to enhance the well-being of both staff and inmates at the facility. Jackie Mathias, a representative from Inmate Services, along with Lieutenant Matthew Proctor, presented Daisy to the attendees, highlighting her role in providing emotional support within the correctional environment.

Daisy, who is currently undergoing final training, has already made a positive impact among the staff and inmate population. Mathias noted that the dog has been well-received and is expected to play a significant role in fostering a supportive atmosphere. The training program for Daisy is facilitated by Pawsgiving Independence, a non-profit organization that collaborates with inmates at Logan Correctional Center to train dogs. This initiative not only benefits the dogs but also provides valuable skills to the inmates involved in the training process.

Mathias expressed gratitude for the support received from the organization and emphasized the unique opportunity McLean County has in integrating a facility dog into its operations. The meeting concluded with an invitation for questions, showcasing the community's interest in the innovative approach to inmate services and mental health support.
