CityLink faces staffing crisis halting essential transportation services

In a recent government meeting, Lauren Stevens, the general manager of CityLink, addressed ongoing challenges faced by the public transportation system, particularly in serving the disability community and the broader population. With over a decade of experience at CityLink, Stevens highlighted the persistent fluctuations in service availability and the critical shortage of workers willing to meet the demands of the transportation system.

Stevens pointed out that the organization is struggling to provide adequate services due to a lack of resources and personnel. She noted that the current workforce, consisting of only four to six drivers, is insufficient to handle the volume of trips required within the city limits. This shortage has led to difficult decisions, including the scaling back of services to individuals living within three-quarters of a mile from bus stops, a move mandated by the Federal Transit Authority.

The city of Abilene has expressed a desire for comprehensive transportation services that cover the entire city limits, indicating a community need that remains unmet due to current operational constraints. As CityLink navigates these challenges, the focus remains on finding solutions to enhance service delivery and meet the transportation needs of all residents.
