City condemns hazardous property after years of neglect

A government meeting revealed alarming details regarding a dilapidated property that has faced ongoing code violations and safety hazards since November 2021. The property, owned by the Shavers since June 2014, has been a focal point of concern due to inadequate sanitation, structural hazards, and hazardous electrical and plumbing issues.

Reports of the property’s deteriorating condition began surfacing in July 2022, when city officials received complaints about a strong odor and the presence of trash. Subsequent investigations uncovered drug paraphernalia and live ammunition on the premises. By October 2022, the situation escalated, prompting the Austin Police Department (APD) to assist in removing squatters and securing the property, which was found to have active gas and electrical hazards.

Despite multiple notifications and a condemnation notice issued on November 22, 2022, the property owner has failed to take any corrective action. A meeting held on February 28, 2024, at city hall highlighted the lack of progress, as the owner did not attend and the property remains unkempt, with high grass and weeds still present.

City officials expressed frustration over the ongoing neglect and the owner’s inaction regarding the required plan of action to address the numerous violations. The case underscores the challenges faced by local authorities in managing properties that pose risks to public safety and community well-being.
