Church Faces Flooding Crisis Seeks City Support for Repairs

During a recent city government meeting, Claudine Brown, representing the King Solomon Baptist Church, addressed significant flooding issues affecting the church's property located at 1050 Minda Street. Brown detailed how the church, built in 1981, is situated in a low-lying area that has been increasingly vulnerable to water damage due to its elevation relative to surrounding streets.

Brown explained that the flooding has resulted in over $15,000 in damages over the past decade, including costly repairs to church pews and concerns about mold growth. She proposed the installation of curb and gutter systems along the south side of Haley Street, adjacent to the church, to mitigate water flow into the property. The estimated cost for this project is approximately $39,100 for 300 linear feet of curb and gutter.

The committee members acknowledged the church's plight but expressed uncertainty about whether city street maintenance funds could be allocated for this type of project. They suggested that Brown consult with city officials to explore potential funding avenues and determine if the project could be classified as a maintenance issue.

The discussion highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by community organizations in addressing infrastructure-related problems and the need for collaboration between local entities and city officials to find viable solutions.
