In a heartfelt ceremony, the city of El Cajon honored Alwyn Norman Olstad on July 21, 2024, proclaiming it \"Alwyn Norman Olstad Day\" in recognition of his remarkable life and contributions. The event began with a pledge of allegiance led by Olstad himself, followed by a moment of silence.
Born on July 21, 1924, in Sioux City, Iowa, to Norwegian immigrants, Olstad demonstrated exceptional courage throughout his life. He graduated from Central High School in 1942 and was drafted into the United States Army in 1943, serving as a marksman in General Patton's Third Army during World War II. Olstad fought valiantly in the European theater, including the pivotal Battle of the Bulge, and was wounded multiple times, earning the Purple Heart for his injuries.
After his military service, Olstad pursued higher education, earning degrees including a master's in theology and a master's in education. He dedicated his career to education, serving as a history teacher and counselor at Horace Mann Junior High until his retirement in 1986. A resident of the Mount Helix area since 1964, Olstad has been a pillar of his community, raising his son Christopher with his late wife, Joyce.
Mayor Bill Wells, along with the city council, presented the proclamation, celebrating Olstad's bravery, sacrifice, and lifelong dedication to education and community service. The event served as a poignant reminder of Olstad's extraordinary contributions to both his country and the lives of countless students.
