City Council Approves Controversial Street Closures for Event

During a recent city council meeting, discussions centered around the approval of a significant community event and the allocation of funds for infrastructure improvements. The council considered a request for in-kind support amounting to $8,446 for the Jagannath Rath Yatra event, which includes the temporary closure of several streets on July 13, 2024. While some council members expressed support for the event, concerns were raised regarding the financial implications, particularly the cost of closing major streets and the need for revenue generation to support essential city projects like a fire station and an animal shelter.

Council member Guzman Lowrie moved to approve the request, which was seconded by council member Salcedo. The motion passed unanimously, indicating a collective agreement on the importance of community events while balancing fiscal responsibilities.

In addition, the council approved Resolution Number 8605, which outlines the five-year Measure I capital improvement plan for fiscal years 2024 through 2029. This plan is crucial for securing approximately $1.9 million annually for street rehabilitation projects, ensuring ongoing maintenance and improvement of the city’s infrastructure.
