City Council Approves Street Closures for Cultural Festival

During a recent government meeting, the council addressed two significant agenda items, including a proposed street vacation and support for an upcoming cultural event.

The first item, resolution number 8603, concerning the vacation of an easement, was discussed but ultimately pulled from the agenda without a vote. Duncan Shantz, owner of Jade Land Developments, spoke in favor of the vacation, arguing that the easement, originally granted in 1973 for access to three lots, has not been utilized for 50 years. Shantz emphasized that alternate access routes have been established and that the easement has been maintained by his company. He expressed concerns over potential alternative uses for the property, such as wildlife corridors, which he opposed, stating that the decision should focus solely on whether the city intends to use the easement for a street.

Following Shantz's comments, the council moved on to the second item, which involved a request for in-kind support for the Jagannath Rath Yatra event scheduled for July 13, 2024. The council approved a request for $8,446 to facilitate the event, which will include street closures for a parade and procession expected to attract approximately 270 attendees. Director Crocker highlighted that this event marks the first of its kind in the Inland Empire, aiming to stimulate local businesses and enhance community engagement.

The meeting concluded without further public comments on the street vacation, and the council proceeded to the next agenda item, reflecting a focus on community events and infrastructure decisions.
