Clay County launches initiative to combat elder abuse

During a recent government meeting, Andrew Pratt, a board member of Clay County Senior Services, accepted a proclamation recognizing Elder Abuse Awareness Day, which falls on June 15. Pratt highlighted the pressing need for awareness and support in Clay County, where the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services reported 844 hotline calls concerning older adults in distress, significantly higher than the 273 calls in neighboring Platte County.

Pratt emphasized the importance of community support for caregivers, noting that programs funded by the county's senior services levy provide essential resources such as caregiver respite programs, meals on wheels, and exercise classes. He pointed out that financial scams also constitute elder abuse, and the levy supports community-based repair programs to protect older adults from contractor fraud.

Furthermore, Pratt stressed that all organizations receiving funding through Clay County Senior Services must implement training policies for their employees to recognize and address elder abuse. He expressed gratitude to the commission for raising awareness about this critical issue, underscoring the responsibility to care for the elderly who once nurtured the community.

Commissioner Nolte echoed Pratt's sentiments, emphasizing the moral obligation to protect and support seniors, who have cared for previous generations. The meeting concluded with a commitment to continue efforts aimed at reducing elder abuse and ensuring that older citizens can live with dignity and security.
