Law enforcement secures major grant to combat violent crime

In a recent government meeting, officials approved several significant grant-funded initiatives aimed at enhancing public safety and law enforcement capabilities.

The first resolution involved awarding a contract related to a capital project, which includes a contingency budget of 10% to accommodate potential changes during the project's execution. The motion to approve the contract was unanimously passed by the committee.

Caitlin Hastings, representing the District Attorney's office, presented a request for approval to accept a $92,100 grant for the 2024 fiscal year. This marks the tenth consecutive year the office has received funding to support one Assistant District Attorney (ADA) position dedicated to crimes against revenue. The motion was also passed without opposition.

Additionally, the Office of the Sheriff introduced a new law enforcement technology grant for fiscal years 2024-2025, aimed at acquiring equipment and software to combat violent crimes, particularly those involving firearms, as well as addressing community concerns such as drug-related offenses and organized retail crime. The sheriff's office requested just under $497,000, which was awarded and subsequently accepted by the committee.

These initiatives reflect ongoing efforts to bolster law enforcement resources and enhance community safety through targeted funding and strategic planning.
