Community rallies for innovative farming and conservation initiatives

During a recent government meeting, officials reported on the busy status of ongoing projects and upcoming events aimed at enhancing agricultural practices and community engagement. Currently, there are 35 active projects, with staff engaged in grant writing for initiatives such as climate-resilient farming and water quality improvement.

One notable event highlighted was the completion of \"Twilight at Timberlane,\" which served as an outreach opportunity to showcase a barnyard project in the Canandaigua Lake Watershed. The event included a grazing clinic in partnership with Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) and the Farm Bureau, emphasizing community education and support.

Looking ahead, the district is addressing staffing challenges by collaborating with Yates and Seneca Counties to conduct an agricultural Best Management Practices (BMP) training event in August. This initiative aims to enhance technical capacity and education among local staff regarding BMP layout and design.

Several local outreach events are scheduled, including a Conservation Field Day in September and the National Envirothon in early August. Additionally, officials proposed a board of supervisors tour to revisit successful manure management projects, which have become increasingly relevant due to new storage and transfer systems being implemented in the county.

The proposed tour aims to inform supervisors about ongoing efforts and the challenges facing the community, particularly regarding manure management and potential community digesters. The board is expected to discuss and finalize plans for the tour in the coming weeks.
