Community leaders demand urgent action to prevent flooding disaster

Residents of Paradise Hills filing 7 have raised urgent concerns regarding recurring flash floods that have impacted their neighborhood, following a recent incident caused by a breach in the stormwater creek. During a city council meeting, the HOA president highlighted that this was the second flood event in a decade, with significant damage reported to several homes. The flooding, which involved thick mud and debris, is believed to be linked to runoff from the nearby Grand Junction Airport.

The HOA has initiated communication with city engineering and the Army Corps of Engineers, emphasizing that maintenance of the creek falls under the responsibility of a neighboring HOA, which operates on a limited budget. Residents have taken it upon themselves to clear debris but feel they have reached a standstill and are seeking assistance from the city to prevent future flooding.

In a separate address, Jeremy Sheets, exalted ruler of the Grand Junction Elks Lodge, reported ongoing issues with vandalism, drug use, and trespassing at their facility. Despite police efforts, these problems have persisted, creating a sense of insecurity among staff and patrons. Sheets requested the city council to consider assigning a dedicated staff member to address these issues and to provide funding for enhanced security measures, including better lighting and surveillance systems.
