Sister demands justice for brother lost to homelessness and drugs

During a recent government meeting, Sabrina Weddle, sister of Saxon Rodriguez, addressed the ongoing challenges faced by the homeless community in Chula Vista. Weddle recounted her brother's arrest on July 16, 2021, at Harborside Park, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive understanding of the issues surrounding homelessness.

Weddle highlighted the dichotomy between the needs of local businesses and the realities faced by homeless individuals. She pointed out that while businesses seek to maintain a clean and safe environment, many homeless individuals have nowhere else to go, often gravitating towards empty fields, parks, and abandoned buildings for shelter.

A significant concern raised by Weddle was the escalating fentanyl crisis in the area, which she warned would persist if the underlying issues of homelessness and addiction were not addressed. She expressed frustration over the circumstances surrounding her brother's arrest, questioning the actions of Chula Vista police officer Daniel Santana, who she claimed did not inform her brother of the reasons for his arrest. Weddle poignantly recalled that her brother, who was homeless and struggling with addiction, was sent downtown without receiving any treatment, ultimately leading to his death just four days later.

Weddle's testimony underscored the urgent need for a more compassionate and effective approach to homelessness and addiction in Chula Vista, calling for community leaders to take action to address these critical issues.
