Mountain biking event set to boost local economy by millions

During a recent government meeting, officials discussed the upcoming mountain biking events and their anticipated economic impact on the region. The meeting highlighted 65 bookings totaling 48,000 room nights, with a shift in focus towards athlete participation as a more accurate metric for assessing the events' success.

The spotlight was on the USA Cycling organization, which will host a significant mountain biking competition on July 25-26, with potential extensions to July 27-28. This event is expected to attract over 1,600 athletes, trainers, and spectators, generating an estimated economic impact of $2.2 million for the area. The presence of the U.S. Olympic mountain biking team, which recently achieved notable success, adds to the excitement surrounding the competition.

Jennifer Valente, a standout athlete who contributed to the U.S. team's success at the Olympics, will represent Virginia's Blue Ridge at the annual meeting scheduled for October 10 at the Salem Civic Center.
