City launches innovative incentive program to boost tourism

In a recent government meeting, officials highlighted the city's ongoing efforts to attract meetings and events, particularly through a robust incentive program aimed at revitalizing the local economy post-COVID-19. The program, which allocates approximately $124,000 for various meetings and an additional $65,000 specifically for third-party meeting planners, is designed to encourage associations and groups to host their events in the city.

The incentive initiative comes in response to the significant challenges faced by many organizations during the pandemic, which hindered their ability to hold annual meetings and generate essential income. By providing financial support, the city aims to offset costs for these groups, making it more appealing for them to choose the area for their gatherings.

In addition to meetings, the city is also focusing on sports events, which have proven to be a substantial economic driver. Officials reported that 54 sports groups brought in an economic impact exceeding $20 million. Notable events included wrestling competitions and the Senior World Cup, which were hosted in Virginia's Blue Ridge, with the city securing a majority of the accommodations for participants.
