School Expansion Sparks Controversy Over Parking and Property Rights

In a recent government meeting, the proposal for a temporary classroom building at Risen Savior Lutheran Church, which currently hosts Summit Classical Academy, was discussed. The plan aims to accommodate the growing student population of the school, which has expanded from 18 students in 2020 to approximately 110 students last year, with projections to reach K-12 status by 2026.

The proposed temporary building will be a single-story structure, approximately 5,400 square feet, designed to house four classrooms, each accommodating up to 20 students. The building is intended to remain on-site for up to five years while the school explores options for a more permanent facility. The site is located within a transitional overlay area that permits additional commercial uses, although this specific proposal is classified as an extension of existing religious use.

During the meeting, concerns were raised by neighboring property owners regarding potential parking issues and the adequacy of communication from the city regarding the proposal. William Sheridan, representing the Broomfield Professional Campus adjacent to the church, expressed frustration over not being notified about the proposal until recently, citing a lack of due process. He emphasized that the shared parking arrangements could lead to conflicts, especially as the school expands to include high school grades.

Supporters of the proposal, including church representatives and parents of students, highlighted the positive impact of Summit Classical Academy on the community and the need for additional classroom space to maintain educational quality. They argued that the proposed location for the temporary building would not significantly disrupt existing parking arrangements, as the area has been underutilized.

The Land Use Review Commission had previously recommended unanimous approval of the proposal, contingent upon the addition of a bicycle parking rack. The meeting concluded with public comments, where both supporters and opponents of the plan voiced their opinions, indicating a community divided on the implications of the school's expansion.
