Community project secures funding to transform green space

In a recent government meeting, discussions centered around the progress and funding of community development projects, highlighting the importance of equitable development initiatives (EDI) in transforming neighborhoods.

Cesar, a representative from a local organization, detailed their successful acquisition of property through the Strategic Investment Fund (SIF), emphasizing the significance of community partnerships. He noted that the owner of the property chose to sell to them rather than a developer, recognizing the positive impact their work had on the community. This acquisition was made possible after securing capacity-building funds, which allowed the organization to rent a space before purchasing the property outright.

Cesar expressed pride in being the first grantee to close on a property through the SIF, underscoring the collaborative efforts that have led to pedestrian safety improvements and plans for redeveloping Littlebrook Park with city, county, and state funds. He also mentioned ongoing fundraising efforts to build a community center, indicating a need for additional financial support to realize their vision.

Council members praised the organization’s achievements and inquired about potential challenges. Cesar highlighted the necessity for streamlined permitting processes and quicker access to funding, which would help expedite project timelines and better serve the community's needs.

The meeting also featured Asia Veil, director of the Indigenous Creatives Collective, who shared her organization’s journey in reclaiming green space for native stewardship. With over $2 million in EDI funding, the Collective successfully navigated a complex property acquisition process, which culminated in the purchase of an acre and a half of land in Rainier Beach. Veil acknowledged the transformative impact of EDI funding on native-led nonprofits and expressed gratitude for the support received throughout their project.
