Whittier community mourns loss of beloved leader Dave Butler

During a recent city council meeting in Whittier, officials and community members gathered to honor the memory of David O. Butler, a beloved former police officer, city council member, and community leader who passed away on July 5, 2024, at the age of 79. The meeting was adjourned in his memory, with heartfelt tributes highlighting his significant contributions to the city.

Born on October 2, 1944, Butler was a Whittier High School graduate and a Vietnam War veteran. He served the Whittier Police Department for 19 years, earning a Medal of Valor for his bravery. His career was marked by a tragic event on December 13, 1979, when he lost his partner, Officer Michael Lane, during an undercover operation, an experience that profoundly impacted him.

After retiring from the police force, Butler opened Carol Anne's 76 gas station, named after his wife, and became actively involved in local politics. He served on the Whittier City Council from 1996 to 2004, including a term as mayor, and contributed to various local organizations, including the Whittier Redevelopment Agency and the Whittier Public Housing Authority.

Colleagues and friends shared personal anecdotes, reflecting on Butler's warm personality and dedication to service. Many recalled his approachable nature, whether during casual conversations at his gas station or his leadership in community initiatives. His legacy includes co-founding the Whittier High School Alumni Association Educational Foundation, which has continued to thrive.
