City launches youth contest to envision greener Buena Park

During a recent Buena Park City Council meeting, several key initiatives and community updates were discussed, highlighting the city's commitment to education, public engagement, and community welfare.

The meeting commenced with a celebration of local achievements, as the city manager presented a video honoring Buena Park graduates who recently completed their college education. This acknowledgment aimed to foster community pride and encourage educational pursuits among residents.

Following this, the city clerk introduced the \"If I Were Mayor\" program, a new initiative inviting students aged 6 to 18 to submit posters and essays on how they would enhance the city's environmental efforts. The contest, which runs until September 12, offers winners the opportunity to have their work displayed publicly and participate in a special day with the mayor.

The council also announced upcoming community events, including a concert featuring the band Tijuana Dogs at Boisring Park and the grand reopening of the Peak Park pool, which has undergone renovations. The reopening event will honor local Olympian Zach Sorn, a gold medalist, and will coincide with a tribute concert by a Bruno Mars cover band.

Additionally, the council is set to unveil a new public park at Whittaker School, made possible by a $3 million state grant, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony scheduled for August 7. This event will also feature a Taylor Swift tribute concert, coinciding with the Buena Park Police Department's National Night Out.

Public comments during the meeting included support for a proposed wellness program from former police officer Jim Scholes, who shared his personal experience with the program's benefits. He also advocated for a sales tax initiative to be placed on the ballot, emphasizing the need for community support.

Another resident, Danielle Schell, raised concerns regarding code enforcement practices, particularly the focus on the Auto Zone drive area. She expressed frustration over the enforcement of regulations that she felt were inconsistently applied, impacting her business operations and the welfare of her employees.
