Buena Park residents push for crucial tax increase vote

During a recent Buena Park city council meeting, community members voiced their concerns and support for a proposed sales tax increase aimed at improving public safety and infrastructure. The discussions highlighted pressing issues such as crime, deteriorating roads, and the need for additional police personnel.

Jason Hong, a local business owner, expressed his worries about rising suspicious activities in his neighborhood, particularly in an alleyway behind his property. He reported an increase in unsanitary conditions and safety concerns affecting residents, urging the council to consider a measure on the November ballot that would enhance security and community quality.

Robert Mote, a retired police lieutenant with decades of service, echoed these sentiments, advocating for the addition of 15 sworn police officers and 10 civilian positions. He emphasized that the city has not seen significant increases in police staffing over the years, which he believes is critical for maintaining public safety, especially during peak times at local attractions like Knott's Berry Farm.

Carmen Koo, a long-time resident and former commissioner, also supported the tax increase, highlighting the need for better pay to retain quality public safety officers and improve community facilities, including parks and road maintenance.

However, not all feedback was positive. Baron Knight raised concerns about prioritizing spending, questioning the necessity of recent hires in non-critical positions while public safety and infrastructure remain underfunded. He argued that the city should reconsider its budget priorities before imposing a new tax on residents.

Council member Brown shared his own experiences with staffing shortages in law enforcement, stressing the importance of competitive salaries to retain officers and ensure timely responses to emergencies.

The council is set to deliberate further on the proposed sales tax measure, which aims to address these community concerns while allowing residents to decide on the issue in the upcoming election.
