Emergency shelter established as wildfires threaten Harney County

In a recent government meeting, officials provided critical updates regarding the ongoing wildfire situation affecting Harney County. A clean air shelter has been established at the senior center, the Harney Hub, to assist individuals with respiratory issues or those seeking refuge from smoke. Public health officials are distributing a limited number of air purifiers and scrubbers, prioritizing those in urgent need.

Support has been pledged from Governor Koteke and Senator Wyden, who have reached out to inquire about the county's situation. Local representatives, including Representative Owens and Senator Finley, have also been kept informed of developments.

In response to the escalating fire threat, the county court convened an emergency session last Sunday, resulting in a local disaster declaration. Additionally, a delegation of authority was signed with the Oregon Fire Marshal, allowing fire crews to take charge of structural protection for various facilities in affected areas. Currently, seven task forces, each consisting of four engines and a tender with 20 personnel, are actively working to bolster the defenses of homes and shelters against the advancing fire.

Evacuation levels have been established, with Burns, Hines, and the Burns tribal area currently under a level one green evacuation status, which advises residents to remain aware and prepared. There are no immediate plans to escalate this status, although officials continue to monitor fire behavior closely.
