City implements new waste collection system amid resident confusion

Residents have begun receiving new polo cards as part of a recent change in waste pickup schedules, leading to some confusion among the community. City officials have made efforts to communicate these changes through various channels, including a dedicated website link, text alerts, and social media posts. Door tags were placed on residences affected by the shift, particularly those whose pickup days have changed from Wednesday to Tuesday. However, for those whose pickups are now scheduled for Thursday, no additional notifications were provided due to staffing limitations.

Despite some initial concerns from residents, feedback has been largely positive regarding the new carts. The transition to the new waste management provider, GFL, is currently underway, with operations being staged at a gravel parking lot south of city hall.

In a significant operational shift, the city has decided to terminate its contract with Veolia for the maintenance and operation of the municipal wastewater plant. This decision has freed up funds that will allow the city to hire two full-time employees to manage the facility, addressing staffing needs that have been identified as critical for effective operations. The new staffing plan includes one full-time employee for weekdays and another part-time employee for weekends, enhancing the city's capacity to maintain the wastewater plant efficiently.
