Aztec plans major truck bypass to ease congestion

In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the long-standing initiative to construct a truck bypass around Aztec, aimed at alleviating congestion on Main Avenue. The proposal, first included in a comprehensive community plan in 2002, has been a recurring theme in various planning documents over the years.

The discussion highlighted the importance of the truck bypass, which was identified as a key recommendation in the 2002 plan under community values. Subsequent surveys, including a 2007 community trends survey, indicated that local residents continue to support the bypass, with nine respondents specifically mentioning it as a priority.

Further backing for the project was found in the 2020 Farmington Metropolitan Planning Organization's 2045 Metropolitan Transportation Plan, which outlines the development of the East Aztec Arterial. This arterial road is seen as a critical component of the region's transportation infrastructure.

Most recently, the 2021 update to Aztec's comprehensive plan reaffirmed the goal of completing the Aztec Arterial and planning for future development. Officials emphasized the need to prioritize funding and collaborate with the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) to facilitate the transfer of ownership of Main Avenue to the city, which could streamline the implementation of the bypass.

The discussions reflect a continued commitment to improving transportation infrastructure in Aztec, with the truck bypass positioned as a vital solution to ongoing traffic challenges.
