City plans ambitious updates to downtown and innovation campus

During a recent government meeting, officials addressed several key urban planning initiatives aimed at enhancing the community's built environment and economic development in McMinnville. Acknowledging frustrations regarding past development strategies, city planners emphasized the importance of integrating sustainable planning and climate change considerations into future projects.

One significant topic was the ongoing update of the airport master plan, originally established in 2004 and expected to be completed by June 2025. This update, led by Willie Williamson, will focus on operational efficiency and land use around the airport, impacting local development policies and zoning regulations.

Another major initiative discussed was the innovation campus project, which aims to create a high-density employment area that fosters business growth and upward mobility. This project encompasses 200 acres and will include commercial and retail spaces, with planning efforts involving multiple development scenarios to determine the best approach for infrastructure and community needs.

The downtown master plan update was also highlighted, with city officials noting the importance of consolidating various community discussions into a cohesive vision for the area. This update will revise the 2000 Downtown Improvement Plan and incorporate findings from previous studies, including a historic preservation plan and a parking management strategy. The goal is to revitalize the downtown area, which has seen minimal new housing starts in recent years, despite increasing demand.

Additionally, discussions included the need for improved connections between the city center, city park, and library, as well as addressing the impact of public agency land ownership on urban renewal efforts.
