City proposes new green roof standard to combat stormwater issues

In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the introduction of a new green roof standard aimed at enhancing environmental sustainability in urban areas. This initiative, prompted by recommendations from the stormwater task force, seeks to incorporate green roofs into the landscaping code.

The proposed standard mandates that buildings within the Central Business District (CBD) with roofs exceeding 5,000 square feet must install a green roof. For all other buildings, the threshold is set at 10,000 square feet. This measure is particularly significant as it addresses environmental concerns following the downgrading of the French Broad River's water quality a few years ago.

By implementing these standards, city officials aim to improve stormwater management and promote greener urban spaces, aligning with broader efforts to enhance the ecological health of the region.
