Sheriff launches innovative shooting sports program for youth

In a recent meeting of the Bossier Parish School Board, Sheriff Julian Whittington unveiled an innovative shooting sports initiative aimed at engaging local youth in firearm safety and marksmanship. The program, developed in collaboration with former superintendent Mitch Downey and former school resource officer James Lonerdeer, seeks to provide students with opportunities to learn responsible firearm handling while fostering teamwork and discipline.

Sheriff Whittington emphasized the importance of the initiative, stating that it goes beyond teaching shooting skills; it aims to instill values such as responsibility and respect for firearms. The program will be conducted under strict safety protocols, ensuring that participants understand and adhere to guidelines for safe firearm handling. Trained deputies will guide students through a curriculum designed to promote both technical skills and character development.

The centerpiece of the initiative is the Georgia Sheriff's Office shooting sports range in Plainview, which will host various team events, including skeet and sporting clays. This facility is expected to enhance not only the technical abilities of participants but also their camaraderie and teamwork.

The sheriff noted the growing popularity of summer camps that have already been established, which focus on hunter education certification and have seen high enrollment rates. With the introduction of this more advanced program, the sheriff aims to cultivate responsible citizenship among youth, preparing them for future challenges both on and off the shooting range.
