County faces financial turmoil amid leadership changes

In a recent government meeting, key financial updates and administrative changes were discussed, highlighting ongoing challenges within the finance department. The meeting revealed that the waste management post fee check for the month totaled $227,571, contributing to an annual revenue of $750,414 with one month remaining in the fiscal year.

A significant personnel change was announced as Melody Foster retired after a year-long transition process, with Kristin Jackson stepping in as the new executive director. Jackson recently addressed the Economic Development Authority (EDA) to outline her vision moving forward.

The meeting also covered various financial reports, including a detailed examination of IRS late payments and penalties. The county received a refund of $21,226.65 for an overpayment but faced multiple penalty notices due to filing errors. The interim finance director is now tasked with addressing these issues, emphasizing the need for thorough documentation to potentially waive penalties.

Concerns were raised regarding delayed processing of invoices, attributed to a lack of staffing and the absence of a full-time finance director since March 2024. The interim director noted that the finance department has been operating with only one person handling accounts payable and payroll, processing over 4,000 invoices and 1,259 payroll entries in just six months.

The meeting concluded with discussions on appropriation requests that were not submitted on time, with administration allowing late submissions to streamline the year-end closeout process. The finance team is actively working to resolve these issues, aiming to improve efficiency and accountability in the department.
