Shoreline declares June LGBTQ plus Bridal Month

In a significant display of support for the LGBTQ+ community, the Shoreline City Council officially proclaimed June 2024 as \"Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer (LGBTQ+) Bridal Month.\" The proclamation was presented during a recent council meeting, where Mayor Christopher Roberts emphasized the city's commitment to fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment for all residents, particularly those within the LGBTQ+ community.

The month of June was chosen to honor the Stonewall riots of 1969, a pivotal event in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights. The proclamation acknowledges the ongoing struggles faced by many individuals in the community, highlighting that despite progress, discrimination persists. The city will fly the progress pride flag at City Hall throughout June as a symbol of solidarity.

Danny Wilkes, a chemistry teacher at Shorewood High School and a leader of the school's LGBTQ+ affinity group, expressed gratitude for the city's support. He coordinates the annual bridal potluck for the Shoreline School District, which aims to create a safe and inclusive space for LGBTQ+ youth.

Margaret, the vice president of the Gender and Sexuality Alliance (GSA) at Shorewood, also spoke at the meeting, emphasizing the importance of community support for queer youth. She noted that events like the pride proclamation and flag-raising help foster a sense of belonging and recognition for LGBTQ+ individuals.

The council's proclamation and the involvement of local youth organizations reflect a broader commitment to equality and acceptance, reinforcing the message that every member of the community deserves dignity and respect.
