County faces space crisis for crucial poll worker training

In a recent government meeting, officials discussed ongoing challenges in securing adequate training spaces for poll workers ahead of the upcoming elections. The current reserved location at AB Tech's main campus has been deemed insufficient due to size constraints and ongoing renovations. Training is set to begin on September 16 and will run through November 2, necessitating a classroom for 30 participants and additional space for precinct setups.

County management is exploring various alternatives, including the recently closed North Star School, but options are limited as many venues are already booked. The East Asheville Library was suggested but is currently occupied for early voting. Attempts to secure space at UNCA and Lenore Ryan have also been unsuccessful.

The meeting also addressed the county's plans to consolidate departments into a new facility at 35 Woodfin, which is expected to be ready for occupancy early next year. This move aims to create a one-stop shop for various county services, although it will involve shared spaces, raising concerns about operational efficiency and security.

Additionally, discussions touched on future plans for a warehouse at Canoe Lane, which would serve as a storage facility for multiple departments, including elections. However, the timeline for these developments remains uncertain, with significant changes anticipated over the next three years.

Officials emphasized the importance of finding a suitable training location, as statutory requirements mandate that poll worker training must be conducted. The urgency of the situation was clear, with officials expressing concern over the limited time available to secure an appropriate venue.
