City tackles rising accidents with new DUI enforcement plan

In a recent government meeting, officials addressed community concerns regarding traffic safety on Railroad Canyon Road, highlighting a significant increase in accidents over the past decade. The discussion centered on the allocation of a $34,358 grant received by the Riverside Sheriff's Office (RSO), which was intended to enhance safety measures and enforcement in response to rising incidents, particularly involving non-residents.

City council members emphasized that the funds did not come to the city directly but were awarded to RSO, which has been actively working to implement safety initiatives. The council noted that many accidents on Railroad Canyon Road involve drivers from neighboring areas, treating the road as a racetrack, prompting residents to call for more stringent enforcement measures.

To address these concerns, the council has prioritized speed enforcement and has already implemented safety features such as green striping and flashing lights for golf cart crossings. The RSO has conducted its first DUI saturation patrol funded by the grant, aiming to curb reckless driving and enhance safety for local residents.

Officials reiterated the importance of community feedback in shaping these initiatives, particularly following a tragic accident involving a pregnant woman last July, which underscored the urgent need for improved traffic safety measures.
