Landslide crisis escalates as homes face unprecedented damage

Concerns over landslide activity in the community have escalated, with reports indicating that over 100 homes are experiencing damage due to shifting earth. The latest findings reveal a significant change in landslide behavior, particularly in the Bridal area, which is now moving faster than the historically affected Portuguese Bend region.

Recent assessments have expanded the landslide boundaries by approximately five acres, with notable movement recorded on both the eastern and western margins. The eastern margin has extended about 50 feet further east on Admirable and 150 feet on Exultant, while the western side has seen an expansion of 180 feet onto the York property, affecting areas previously thought stable.

Additionally, the seafloor in the southwest toe of the Portuguese Bend landslide has uplifted, leading to public inquiries about the phenomenon. This uplift is attributed to the ongoing movement of the landslide, which is now encroaching into the surf zone, resulting in a slight gain of land along the beach.

In response to the increasing requests for foundation repairs in the landslide area, an expedited process has been established to assist homeowners. While residents are encouraged to consult geotechnical professionals, they now have the option to undertake underpinning measures more swiftly through the building and safety department.
