City Council Deliberates Controversial Doggy Daycare Proposal

Residents voiced concerns over noise and potential disturbances from a proposed doggy daycare during a recent city council meeting. The facility, planned for 9526 Knoll Avenue, would include an outdoor play area and overnight boarding for dogs. Local residents expressed frustration over existing loud events and noise from bullhorns, indicating that previous calls to the police had not resolved the issues.

The council discussed the need for a special use permit for the daycare, which is located near residential areas. The proposed outdoor area, measuring 1,200 square feet, is situated approximately 120 feet from the nearest residence. Noise was highlighted as a significant concern during the planning commission hearing, although the applicant did not provide a noise study. The planning commission recommended approval of the permit with a vote of 9 to 1.

Council members inquired about regulations regarding the distance between outdoor play areas and residences, noting that current codes do not specify a minimum distance. They referenced past approvals and denials of similar requests, emphasizing the unique nature of this proposal as it is not a renewal of an existing facility.

The council ultimately decided to continue discussions on the special use permit to their meeting scheduled for August 5, 2024, allowing residents to stay informed and participate in future discussions. The agenda for that meeting will be published online the Thursday prior.
