Student leaders inspire future with ambitious goals

During a recent school board meeting, student representative Sofia Bruno Alves shared her experiences and future aspirations, highlighting her leadership roles in the ROTC program and the International Baccalaureate Career Program (IBCP) at Riverview High School. Alves, who serves as the executive officer of ROTC, expressed pride in supporting 130 cadets and emphasized the importance of her instructors in shaping her academic and extracurricular journey. She plans to pursue a biochemistry degree with the goal of becoming a doctor.

The board acknowledged Alves' contributions and expressed appreciation for her commitment to education and community service. The meeting also recognized students involved in the STAR program, which provides mentorship opportunities for youth engaged with the Boys and Girls Club.

Superintendent Connor reported a successful start to the school year, thanking staff and parents for their efforts. He addressed ongoing challenges faced by the community, particularly in the aftermath of Hurricane Idalia, and reminded attendees of available resources for support.

A significant topic discussed was the upcoming referendum on November 5, the first in over 20 years, which seeks to continue funding for various educational programs, including staff retention, arts, and safety measures. Community forums will be held across the district to inform residents about the referendum's importance.

Additionally, the board announced a fan appreciation night for the Bradenton Martyrs on October 31, with proceeds benefiting Sarasota County schools. Superintendent Connor also introduced a series of \"Coffee with Connor\" events aimed at fostering open dialogue between the community and school officials, with the next session scheduled for September 19 at the Shannon Staub Library.
