City moves forward with ambitious Pelham airport master plan

In a recent government meeting, officials announced the initiation of a master plan process for the Peloponnese Airport, following approval from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This significant step is essential for any major improvements at the airport, which are projected to unfold over the next 20 years.

The first phase of the process involves hiring a consultant to draft a long-term master plan. Officials estimate that it will take approximately one year to complete this plan, including a 60 to 90-day period to onboard the consultant. Once finalized, the projects outlined in the master plan will become eligible for FAA funding, which is crucial for the airport's development.

Additionally, the city council is preparing to review an amendment to the 2080 plan, which is expected to be presented this fall. This amendment is necessary to address financial matters related to grants previously secured for the airport. Officials clarified that the grants, which are amortized over 20 years, will need to be managed carefully, especially if any property purchased with these funds is sold.

The discussion also highlighted the ongoing rental income generated from the 378 acres of land associated with the airport, which is currently managed by the SCRA. Officials emphasized the importance of maintaining this relationship until the financial implications of the grants are fully resolved.
