Westchester launches historic girls wrestling team

In a significant move for gender equality in sports, the Westchester Area School District is set to establish its first-ever girls wrestling team. During a recent government meeting, approval was sought for the formation of the Westchester Area School District Girls Wrestling Team, which will include female student athletes from Henderson, Ruston, and East High Schools.

This initiative marks a pivotal moment for the district, as it aims to provide female athletes with the opportunity to compete in local wrestling tournaments and strive for qualification in the PIAA District 1 tournament at the end of the season. Initial interest has been promising, with eight athletes from East High, two from Henderson, and three from Ruston expressing their commitment to the sport.

The proposal is currently on the agenda for approval at this month's PIAA Board of Directors meeting, and officials are optimistic about the positive impact this new venture will have on athletics within the Westchester Area School District.
