Pella community plans ambitious $8.3 million recreation center

During a recent government meeting, officials discussed the potential advancement of several community projects, including a proposed indoor recreation center, the Pella Community Center renovation, and the University Street extension. Mayor de Wardes emphasized the importance of building consensus among stakeholders to move these initiatives forward, which he believes will enhance clarity in the decision-making process and benefit all involved.

The Pella Community Center project is estimated at $8.3 million, which includes a complete renovation of the existing facility and an addition to improve accessibility, including an elevator. The Friends of the Community Center have collaborated closely with city engineers and have gathered extensive public input to shape the project’s design.

In addition to the community center, the meeting highlighted the success of Woodburn, a small community that recently built a recreation center valued at over $20 million, funded through a combination of bonds and donations. This example was presented to inspire confidence in Pella's ability to undertake similar projects, suggesting that if a community of 2,000 can achieve such a feat, Pella, with its larger population, should be able to do so as well.
