Community rallies for new rec center to boost economy

During a recent government meeting, community members passionately advocated for the construction of a new recreational center in Pella, emphasizing the significant benefits it would bring to local sports, economy, and overall community health.

Speakers highlighted the need for an aquatic center as part of the proposed facility, which would enhance existing programming and attract more visitors to the town. A local swim team representative noted that hosting swim meets could draw between 300 to 900 participants, generating substantial economic activity as visitors would require accommodations and dining options. The proposed aquatic center would also allow for a variety of programs, including water aerobics, swimming lessons, and competitive training for local teams.

Dan Zylstra, a school administrator, pointed out the acute shortage of gym space for youth sports, particularly during winter months. He urged the council to consider the long-term benefits of the rec center for future generations, stating, \"The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.\"

Young swimmers also voiced their support, stressing the inadequacy of the current pool, which is over 30 years old and not suitable for competitive diving.
