Community rallies for affordable housing amid rising costs

In a recent government meeting, community members voiced their support for a new housing project aimed at addressing local affordability issues. One resident highlighted the challenges faced by young families, particularly her son, who struggles to afford the current housing market, where monthly mortgages can reach $5,000. She emphasized the importance of keeping families within the community, noting that affordable apartment options would allow her son to live close to home and maintain connections with friends.

The resident praised Granville Homes for their Brookside Villas project, which transformed a previously blighted orchard into a vibrant community space with 162 units, contributing positively to the neighborhood's safety and aesthetics. She expressed her desire for more affordable housing options that would enable young adults to remain in the area where they grew up.

Drew Phelps, another speaker, shared his perspective as a renter and former employee of the project’s applicant. He defended the project against opposition, arguing that the proposed development would not overwhelm the neighborhood with multifamily units, as it includes a significant number of single-family homes. Phelps criticized the notion that renters would negatively impact local schools and community dynamics, asserting that the housing market naturally accommodates shifts in demand.

The meeting concluded with a motion to adopt the environmental assessment of the project and deny an appeal against it, which was approved by the commission. This decision marks a step forward in addressing the community's housing needs while fostering local growth and stability.
