Outreach center empowers LGBTQ community with vital programs

During a recent government meeting, representatives from the Antelope Valley's only LGBTQ+ outreach center presented an overview of their mission and programs aimed at supporting the local community. Colin Ray, the center's treasurer, and CJ Carrion Bennett, the vice president, highlighted the importance of fostering a sense of belonging and support for LGBTQ+ individuals in the area.

Ray shared his personal journey, noting that he became involved with the outreach center after experiencing the impact of its programs on his life. He emphasized the center's role in creating a supportive environment, particularly following the Pulse nightclub shooting, which motivated many in the community to seek connection and solidarity.

The outreach center offers a variety of programs designed to cater to different segments of the LGBTQ+ community. Key initiatives include a support group for transgender and gender nonconforming individuals, a women's group that combines social and educational elements, and a 50-plus group aimed at older community members. Additionally, the center is working to revive its men's group and has introduced the Elevate Leadership Network, which focuses on professional development for LGBTQ+ individuals.

For youth, the center runs the Breakout program, targeting high school-aged participants and providing a safe space for social interaction and support. The presenters underscored the center's commitment to inclusivity and the importance of treating all individuals with civility and respect, as articulated in a quote shared during the presentation.
