Community center plans ambitious growth for Pride events

The recent government meeting highlighted the ongoing efforts of a local LGBTQ+ community center to expand its Pride Month celebrations and seek financial support for its operations. Since its inception in 2020, the center has significantly increased its Pride events from six in 2021 to twelve this year, thanks to collaborations with local businesses and sponsorships from companies like Northrop Grumman and Tradecraft Farms.

Looking ahead to 2025, the center aims to organize a parade and enhance community involvement by 13% through vendor collaborations. The planning for this event is set to begin in September, with monthly meetings to coordinate efforts with city officials.

During the meeting, discussions also centered on the center's lease for its property on Cedar Avenue. The center currently pays $3,000 annually in rent and is exploring options for financial assistance. City officials suggested reaching out to the finance department for potential funding opportunities and emphasized the importance of connecting with the Parks and Recreation department, which may offer discounts for nonprofit organizations.

The center's representatives expressed gratitude for the community's support and acknowledged the challenges of operating as a small nonprofit, particularly in securing consistent funding. They highlighted the need for collaboration with city resources to alleviate financial pressures and enhance their programming for the LGBTQ+ community.
