Dual credit program saves students over 600000 in tuition

During a recent government meeting, officials highlighted the significant impact of dual credit courses offered in collaboration with Southwestern Illinois College (SWIC) and Saint Louis University. This past school year, the program featured 18 course offerings, demonstrating a robust enrollment trend among local high schools within the Southwestern Illinois Education System.

In the spring of 2023, participating schools reported a total of 596 enrollments, resulting in over 2,000 credits earned. The fall semester saw 309 enrollments, contributing an additional 950 credits. Notably, O'Fallon High School stood out with 771 enrollments, leading to an impressive accumulation of 2,300 credits.

The dual credit initiative has proven to be a substantial financial benefit for families. With an average cost of $123 per credit hour, the program saved families over $288,000 in tuition for a single semester and more than $600,000 over the course of a year. This financial relief, coupled with the opportunity for students to earn college credits while still in high school, underscores the program's value in preparing students for higher education.

The meeting also celebrated the achievements of graduates, many of whom stood to acknowledge their earned college credits during the graduation ceremony, reflecting the program's success in providing students with a head start on their college journeys.
