Community divided over controversial development project approval

In a recent government meeting, a long-standing development case was discussed, with the hearing examiner recommending approval for changes to a project that has been in the pipeline since 2016. The proposal involves transitioning from 55 approved residential units to 240 rooms, which the applicant argues will better serve the market. The marina portion of the project is currently under construction, with hopes to have additional components operational within the next 18 months.

Despite the hearing examiner's recommendation, concerns were raised by community members regarding the project's compatibility with local needs. Joanne Semmer, a neighbor and chairman of the San Carlos Island Community Redevelopment Corporation, expressed strong opposition, citing issues with hurricane evacuation and the project's aesthetic appeal. She highlighted a history of legal challenges, including a previous denial by an administrative law judge, which was later overturned by the governor and cabinet.

The board acknowledged the lengthy history of the project and the efforts made by staff and the hearing examiner. However, the community's concerns about the project's impact and design remain a significant point of contention as discussions continue.
