Roswell faces urgent airport upgrades for upcoming air races

During a recent government meeting, officials addressed critical issues affecting the Roswell Air Center, particularly in light of the upcoming National Championship Air Races scheduled for 2025. A significant concern raised was the staggering 400% increase in insurance premiums for the air center, which has created budgeting challenges for tenants. One tenant reported insurance costs exceeding $275,000, prompting the need for a meeting later this month to seek resolutions.

The meeting also highlighted the economic impact of the air races, referencing a study from the University of Nevada at Reno that indicated the event generated over $158 million for the city of Reno in just one week, attracting more than 150,000 attendees, with a substantial portion traveling by air. In contrast, Roswell's airport struggles to accommodate air traffic, with only 5,933 passenger boardings recorded in June—24% of the number of passengers that flew into Reno during the air races.

Officials expressed urgency in preparing Roswell's airport facilities to handle the expected influx of travelers. The Airport Advisory Commission recommended the formation of a working group to strategize on improving airport infrastructure, including expanding the terminal to facilitate check-in, security screening, and luggage retrieval. Given the anticipated demand, it was noted that many travelers might initially opt to fly into nearby cities such as Albuquerque or Lubbock and drive to Roswell, highlighting the need for immediate action to enhance the airport's capacity.
